Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS)

RESPONSE achieved PCI DSS Accreditation status in May 2011, joining a very exclusive club of Accredited Level 1, Service Providers, who are able to provide their customers with the assurance that systems are secure and that sensitive payment card information is protected.

What is PCI DSS?
PCI DSS is the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard - established by the five members of the PCI Security Standards Council; American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, MasterCard Worldwide and Visa Inc

PCI DSS was developed to:

  • Encourage and enhance cardholder data security
  • Facilitate the broad adoption of consistent data security measures globally
  • Provide a baseline of technical and operational requirements designed to protect cardholder data

Why is data security so important?
Millions of computer records containing sensitive personal information have been involved in security breaches since 2005.  Criminals are actively targeting those with lax security for cardholder data and if you are at fault for a security breach business fallout can be severe - including fines and penalties, lost sales or even going out of business

Who must comply?
At the most basic level, you must comply if you either store, process or transmit cardholder data.

What are the high level requirements?
PCI DSS comprises a minimum set of requirements for protecting cardholder data, and may be enhanced by additional controls and practices to further mitigate risks.

These include:

  • Build & maintain a secure network
  • Protect cardholder data
  • Maintain a Vulnerability Management programme
  • Implement strong access control
  • Regularly monitor & test networks
  • Maintain an Information Security policy

Benefits to clients include:

  • Provides third party assurance that systems are secure
  • Ensures that sensitive payment card information is protected
  • Provides customers with trust and the confidence in doing  business with you
